The European regulation 78/2009 was finally adopted on January 14th, 2009, and published February 2nd, 2009. The so called phase 2 will include modified test parameters and a new time schedule. The different phase of the regulation will come into effect in a total of eight stages, depending on vehicle categories and masses. Whereas these regulations become effective in the future, the phase 1 has been in effect since 2005, covered by the EC directives 2003/102 and 2004/90.
Pedestrian protection has also received additional weight within the new Euro NCAP rating scheme. The new overall rating, which includes pedestrian protection, forces carmakers to improve pedestrian protection, in order to receive 4 or 5 star ratings in the future.

The PraxisConference, which will be held for the fourth time in 2009, is a unique event combining lectures and praxis. The lectures held by renowned experts, inform about legal requirements, NCAP tests, recent findings from accident research as well as development strategies and tools and active and passive technical solutions for pedestrian protection.

Highlight of the conference are the praxis sessions held in the laboratories of Germany’s Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) which is operated by BGS Böhme & Gehring GmbH. Test equipment and impactors are demonstrated and explained in detail. The preparation, execution and analysis of pedestrian impact tests are shown in live demonstration. Moreover, solutions implemented in new vehicle models are presented and discussed. This year the following vehicles will be presented: Audi A5 convertible, Mercedes E-Class, Ford Fiesta and Opel Insignia. As a highlight the E-Class’ active bonnet will be activated and can be reversed manually by the attendees.

Who should attend?
The conference is suited for everyone involved in pedestrian protection in the automotive industry. It is a well established platform for exchange among industry experts, but with its unique praxis sessions it is also an excellent introduction for newcomers in this field.
