X-ray Diagnostics for Crash-test Application

Under crash loads, inner structures experience irreversible dynamic processes which may have crucial impact on vehicle safety. Up to now, imaging methods do not allow to analyze these processes in situ. For this reason, Fraunhofer EMI and Mercedes-Benz for the first time developed a high-speed X-ray diagnostics system that facilitates the recording of high-speed, transient, concealed deformation processes of complex structures during crash with a frame rate of up to 1000 frames per second. Corresponding integrated assessment methods that transfer the recorded experimental data into CAE environments allow for a detailed analysis and evaluation of the hidden processes.

The workshop encompasses

  • technological basics to utilize X-ray technology for the visualization of hidden crash processes
  • laws and regulations concerning radiation protection
  • exemplary results

Possible applications will be discussed.
