The Institute of Mathematics of the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) coordinates the doctoral student network »THREAD - Joint Training on Numerical Modeling of Highly Flexible Structures for Industrial Applications«. The Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM is located at a central position in the program.

The dissertation topics are application-oriented, and the doctoral students ("early stage researchers") are also allowed to complete a three-month internship with one of the industry partners. Its contents are discussed closely with the supervisors of the dissertation. The 12 business partners also include fleXstructures GmbH, a spin-off of the Fraunhofer ITWM, and IPS AB, a spin-off of the Fraunhofer Chalmers Center FCC in Gothenburg, which, together with ITWM, is developing the IPS Cable Simulation software.
