First Hybrid automotive CAE Grand Challenge has been a Success! On 29 and 30 September 2020 carhs.training organized the 12th automotive CAE Grand Challenge - for the first time as a hybrid conference, i.e. interested parties could participate on-site in Hanau, Germany or online via the internet. 78 people participated on-site in Hanau (Germany). The online access was used by 95 people. In total this gave the second largest number of participants of a Grand Challenge. read more ... Modelling of statistical Influences of Microdefects for Safe Production of casted ComponentsA challenge for the design and safety of casted components is the scattering of mechanical properties. Microdefects that occur during the casting process determine the quality of a casting. The development of these defects is random. Within the framework of an AiF project, the Fraunhofer Institutes IFAM and IWM have developed a method for modeling these stochastic influences on the failure behavior of castings.

This has an impact on the practical design of components: There, not only the fiber orientation plays an important role, but also the material behavior resulting from contact with media or from superimposed load cases. So far, there are no established methods for this. In addition, it is not immediately apparent which aspects have to be taken into account in the design process in order to design components correctly. The Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability meets these challenges together with industrial consultants by developing customer-specific methods. The aim is to use existing structures and available tools and to integrate the methods into company structures in the best possible way. The Darmstadt institute accompanies its partners from simulation and material modeling to mechanical testing and evaluation of the results. The results are simulation-supported procedures that take into account very individual load scenarios and thus allow a resource-efficient, lightweight and innovative component design.
