The greatest potential of digitization in materials-intensive companies lies in the cross-process linking of material data. It promises to shorten component development times, optimize complex manufacturing processes more quickly, and ensure even more reliable plant operation than before. The problem is the very heterogeneous nature of material data. It makes linking them extremely complex. A research project of the state of Baden-Württemberg led by the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials IWM in Freiburg, MaterialDigital, has now made great progress in structuring material data into a consistent data space.
In many ways, an electric vehicle (EV) is mechanically simpler than a car with an internal combustion engine (ICE). There are fewer moving parts in an electric motor than in an ICE and less maintenance is required to keep it performing for the vehicle s lifetime. However, consumers still carry concerns for the expected span of the electric car's battery life. To be sure, replacing an electric vehicle's battery is an expensive proposition. For example, a new battery pack for a Chevrolet Bolt EV is reportedly priced at more than $15,000, not including labor costs.
Threedy is a spinoff of the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD based in Darmstadt. Threedy has now secured seed funding to begin marketing its instant3Dhub platform. The platform primarily supports visualization, VR and AR (virtual reality/augmented reality) applications, initially for the automotive, aerospace and energy sectors, as well as for users of BIM (building information modeling) solutions.

Wear is a ubiquitous and costly phenomenon which can progressively reduce the efficiency of equipment and culminate in its functional failure. Equipment components, which interact with granular materials, can experience particularly high rates of wear, and so an understanding of where wear occurs, how quickly it develops and its effect on equipment performance is key for generating improved designs. Traditionally these questions have been addressed via physical prototyping, which can be slow and expensive.
