IAV and TU Munich bring AI to the Race Track

For years, leading heads in the automotive industry have been tinkering with automated driving. In an innovation project in cooperation with the Technical University of Munich, IAV pushed ahead with research into potential future technologies - and not just anywhere, but on the race track. "rAIcing - autonomous driving on the race track" was the name of the cooperative project that had been launched as part of the international "Roborace" competition.

Maximizing Electric Vehicle (EV) Range in Cold Weather Environments

article imageA critical aspect of engineering for complex systems is managing designs that must perform under a wide range of combined parameters. An example is designing an electric passenger vehicle's climate control system. Here we illustrate a state-of-the-art simulation method that vehicle manufacturers employ to maximize their electric vehicle range while keeping customers satisfied with thermal comfort. We explore in this article the past benchmark convection methods of thermal management and challenge that approach with a radiant alternative and estimate the impact on EV range.

Autonomous Driving in the City: Safe with Simulation

article imageBefore automated vehicles can be on the road, their safety must be ensured. This requires numerous tests in simulation, because not all situations can be tested in real traffic. In the SET Level project, Fraunhofer LBF is working with partners from industry and science on efficient simulation technology. This should be flexible enough to be used for different applications and stages in vehicle development, shift a significant proportion of driving tests to simulation, and thus safeguard and shorten release and approval procedures. First results are available!

New Method for performing Topology Optimization of FSI Problems

article imageWhen developing systems that involve fluid structure interaction (FSI), such as bridges, aircraft, and biomedical applications, engineers may want to use topology optimization early on in the design process. However, many topology optimization methods are only available for FSI problems within an academic scope. Researchers developed a new methodology to help alleviate this issue.

Building Better Engines with AI: Deep Learning speeds up Simulations for cleaner Combustion

article imageDavid Schmidt is protecting the environment, but not in the way he first intended. In engineering graduate school, his interest was nuclear fusion. A persuasive Ph.D. advisor guided him toward the physics of fuel injection, a process central to both inertial confinement fusion reactors and internal combustion engines, the advisor s other line of research. With practical fusion reactors still decades away, Schmidt veered toward engines.
