View the Presentation Program of the automotive CAE Grand Challenge 2021 online and register now!

This year's automotive CAE Grand Challenge will take place on October 19 - 20, 2021 as a hybrid conference in Hanau (Germany) and the Internet!

In September 2020 we identified the most critical, current challenges of automotive CAE. These "Grand Challenges" form the topics of the automotive CAE Grand Challenge 2021. In order to overcome these challenges, the automotive CAE Grand Challenge promotes the exchange between users, researchers and software developers, since the solution will only be achieved in cooperation of these stake holders.

Machine Learning accelerates Material Simulations

article imageResearch, development and production of new materials depend crucially on fast and at the same time accurate simulation methods. Machine learning, in which artificial intelligence (AI) independently acquires and applies new knowledge, will make it possible in the future to develop complex material systems purely virtually. How this works and which applications will benefit from it is explained by a researcher from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) together with colleagues from Göttingen and Toronto.

Clear View for Autonomous Vehicles: IAV determines ideal Placement of Sensors

article imageHighly automated driving is a key technology for tomorrow's mobility. How such vehicles will perform in everyday use also depends on whether the sensors stably work under the most adverse conditions. Berlin-based engineering specialist IAV uses a specially developed simulation model to simulate how lidar, radar and the like need to be positioned in order to function even when it rains or gets dirty - thus saving time and money in development.

Henrik Sönnerlind from Comsol explains the Difference between Plane Stress and Plane Strain

article imageWe live in a three-dimensional world or maybe four-dimensional, if you also consider time. Still, in engineering analysis, it is common to use 2D approximations to save both modeling and computational resources. In this blog post, we take a look at when and how it is possible to study problems in the field of solid mechanics using 2D formulations.

Research Group led by EDAG develops Child Seat Shell from sustainable raw Materials

article imageIn the future, highly stressed structural components in automotive applications are also to be manufactured using sustainable raw materials. To this end, EDAG has researched the potential of biopolymer-based natural fiber-reinforced plastics (bio-NFRPs) with regard to structural, crash and safety relevance in the "RegScha" joint research project, and has developed a seat shell for a child's car seat in composite design that meets the high structural and safety requirements, and simulates crash behavior. At the same time, it exhibits a weight saving compared to the reference designs.

Coupled Review of Structural Dynamic Effects and Loads relevant to Operational Strength at Fraunhofer LBF

article imageIn the reliable design of products and systems, the boundary between operational strength and structural dynamic loading cannot always be clearly defined. The frequency ranges in which classical operational strength-relevant loads act often lead to further stresses due to the interaction with the structural dynamic properties. These also result in fatigue and component failure or strongly influence the comfort and usability of a system. Scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability have developed innovative approaches that enable a coupled, higher-level numerical as well as experimental consideration of the overall system stresses.
