ROBORACE how Self-driving Cars conquer the Race Track

article imageAnd there it is, speeding past you. So fast that it looks as if no one is sitting behind the wheel. But wait a minute - there really is no one sitting in there. Is that possible? Yes, it is! At Graz University of Technology, work is being done diligently to ensure that such a self-driving car will one day drive through the streets like any other: in Team ARG (Autonomous Racing Graz), a group of young researchers.

Free Access to Toyota THUMS generates strong take-up Outside Automotive

article imageToyota made THUMS available free of charge on a dedicated public website at the start of this year, and already 400 users wolrd-wide have downloaded the application. Use cases of THUMS now also include ergonomics studies in non-automotive areas. For example, the THUMS model is used in bed design aimed at bedsore prevention, and also in the design of rackets, American football helmets and shoes for injury prevention.

Decoding Butterfly Flight with High-Speed Cameras and a Wind Tunnel

article imageOn a hot summer day, Lund University biologists Christoffer Johansson and Per Henningsson waded through the grass and wildflowers of a meadow near the school s field station in Sweden. They moved quietly and deliberately toward the brief flutter of a cantaloupe-colored insect, ready to collect it using a soft fabric net.

Inflation of Elastomer Sheets: Bi-axial Material Properties enable improved Modeling

article imageThe results of numerical simulation of elastomer components often deviate significantly from the real behavior of the components. One potential reason is that only data from unidirectional tensile tests are taken into account. Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability LBF have improved known test specifications for the biaxial tensile test. The implemented optical 3D measurement of the specimen under load enables the precise recording of material properties. The data from the new method improves material modeling and thus forms the basis for increased design quality of elastomer components.
