Make ‘America First’ in Pedestrian Protection Global NCAP tells Donald Trump

In response to President Donald Trump’s claim last week that a so called ‘bowling ball’ test is preventing US automobiles from entering the Japanese market, Global NCAP has written to the US President urging him to make ‘America First’ in pedestrian protection by adopting the same global standard applied by Japan. In their letter, Global NCAP, the leading international consumer crash testing organisation, explain the purpose of the United Nation’s Global Technical Regulation on pedestrian protection (GTR No 9) which aims to mitigate the risk of head injury by encouraging deformation of the hood.

ZF develops Auto Industry’s lightest Knee Airbag Module

article imageZF will launch an industry-first fabric housing knee airbag in 2019 for a major European vehicle manufacturer. The new airbag, which utilizes a fabric housing, will be up to 30 percent lighter than a traditional metal housing knee airbag, and will help improve occupant protection in a crash.

New Volkswagen Centre of Competence for Safety

article imageWith its new safety centre, Volkswagen is bringing together its vehicle safety expertise at a single location. Blending into the existing architecture, a new three-story building with approximately 8,000 square metres of floor space was constructed at the headquarters in Wolfsburg. The centrepiece is a new state-of-the-art crash sled facility which for the first time can simulate lateral and rotational vehicle body movements both horizontally and vertically.

New Research on the Strength of Children’s Bones could help in the Design of safer Car Seats

article imageResearchers at the University of Sheffield have successfully used computer simulated models and medical imaging to test the strength of young children’s bones, producing results which could help car seat manufacturers design safer car seats for young children. The study, the first on infant bone strength in relation to age/weight using models developed from modern medical images, is published in the Journal of Biomechanics and Modeling in Mechanobiology.

New IIHS Passenger-side Ratings for 7 small SUVs

article imageIn a new round of evaluations, 5 of 7 small SUVs earn good ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for occupant protection in a passenger-side small overlap front crash. The ratings bring to 16 the number of small SUVs the Institute has evaluated in the passenger-side small overlap front test, which was introduced in 2017 to encourage manufacturers to offer the same level of protection for front-seat passengers as drivers in this type of crash.
