ZF will launch an industry-first fabric housing knee airbag in 2019 for a major European vehicle manufacturer. The new airbag, which utilizes a fabric housing, will be up to 30 percent lighter than a traditional metal housing knee airbag, and will help improve occupant protection in a crash.
MESSRING is celebrating a special anniversary in 2018: for 50 years, the company has been developing and producing turnkey crash test facilities and innovative components for the automotive industry. In an interview with the CEO Dierk Arp we are talking about the next 50 years of crash test technology. 
With its new safety centre, Volkswagen is bringing together its vehicle safety expertise at a single location. Blending into the existing architecture, a new three-story building with approximately 8,000 square metres of floor space was constructed at the headquarters in Wolfsburg. The centrepiece is a new state-of-the-art crash sled facility which for the first time can simulate lateral and rotational vehicle body movements both horizontally and vertically. 
Researchers at the University of Sheffield have successfully used computer simulated models and medical imaging to test the strength of young children’s bones, producing results which could help car seat manufacturers design safer car seats for young children. The study, the first on infant bone strength in relation to age/weight using models developed from modern medical images, is published in the Journal of Biomechanics and Modeling in Mechanobiology. 
In a new round of evaluations, 5 of 7 small SUVs earn good ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for occupant protection in a passenger-side small overlap front crash. The ratings bring to 16 the number of small SUVs the Institute has evaluated in the passenger-side small overlap front test, which was introduced in 2017 to encourage manufacturers to offer the same level of protection for front-seat passengers as drivers in this type of crash.

They have continuously demonstrated innovative thinking around their product portfolio and introduced new technologies in close collaboration with their customers. 
The simulation process has gained importance over the last decades for the cost-effective and reliable development of vehicle safety systems. The use of updated Human Body Models (HBMs) is key in the development process in order to deliver trustworthy simulations so that impact protection can be improved. One of the main objectives of the SENIORS project is to investigate and develop HBMs representative of elderly and overweight people as car occupants. 
Reliability and optimization of safety are essential aspects for assistance systems. This applies in particular to camera monitoring systems that are used as a replacement for the exterior mirrors in vehicles to improve the driver's perception of the environment. ADASENS Automotive GmbH, which is part of the Spanish FICOSA Group acting under the ADAS Business Unit, is now presenting its lane change assistant (LCAS) as a new development, which shows all the important information for the driver before, during and after a lane change. 
The Pathfinder Award is the highest honor given annually by the Automotive Safety Council, the automotive safety supplier trade association. The award is conferred on a recipient with a long professional history of significant contributions and improvements to the protection of automotive road users.
