With the development of the first crash test dummy in Kistler`s company history, they seamlessly follow the strategy to move from a component supplier to a full system provider, one-stop-shop for THOR-DTI. Kistler has developed the THOR 50th ATD which enables customers to get the complete system of dummy, instrumentation and integrated DTI technology from one source. 
Euro NCAP continues to set the agenda with new, more demanding challenges on safety technology to help protect vulnerable road users, including the introduction of the first cycling detection test for AEB. The 5 star result for the new Nissan LEAF published echoes the success of the original LEAF introduced in 2011 – the first all-electric car rated 5 stars by Euro NCAP. 
Rear-facing car seats have been shown to significantly reduce infant and toddler fatalities and injuries in frontal and side-impact crashes, but they’re rarely discussed in terms of rear-impact collisions. Because rear-impact crashes account for more than 25 percent of all accidents, researchers at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center conducted a new study to explore the effectiveness of rear-facing car seats in this scenario. 
Accident data analysis has revealed that elderly car occupants are at higher risk of chest injury than younger car occupants, particularly in low or moderate impact speed crashes. SENIORS aims at improving the methods to assess thoracic injury risk. 
Dry, icy, snowy, or wet: awareness of road conditions is a crucial safety factor as accidents in severe weather arise mainly due to significant loss of friction between tires and the surface of the road. With its Road Condition Observer, Continental has introduced a solution that allows road conditions to be classified with regard to tire/road friction. A specific situation called aquaplaning is extremely dangerous for manually driven vehicles as well as automated ones. 
MESSRING installs a 100-metric-ton crash block at IAV Ingolstadt’s test facility, which can be repositioned for "small overlap tests" within five minutes. Since the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) introduced the small overlap crash test in the US in 2012, the demand for these types of frontal impact tests has increased steadily year after year. 
Australasia's independent vehicle safety advocate, ANCAP, has hosted one of Euro NCAP’s vehicle safety assessment inspectors as part of its reciprocal test data sharing and protocol alignment. Mr Simon Edmonds, a senior vehicle safety inspector attended ANCAP crash test laboratories in Sydney and Melbourne throughout the week as part of a knowledge-sharing and development program in place as part of ANCAP and Euro NCAP’s 2018 harmonisation. 
An estimated 1.25 million people are killed every year in road traffic crashes, and up to 50 million more are injured, often seriously. Beyond human suffering, road traffic deaths and injuries cause significant economic losses to individuals and societies, keeping millions of people in poverty and creating an estimated $1.85 trillion burden on the global economy each year. This makes addressing road safety one of the most pressing social, economic, health and development challenges of our time.

The preliminary 2017 road safety statistics released by the Commission show, for the second year in a row, a decrease in the number of fatalities of around 2 %. 25 300 people lost their lives on EU roads in 2017, which is 300 fewer than in 2016 (-2 %) and 6 200 fewer than in 2010 (-20 %).
