Thatcham Research and the ABI (Association of British Insurers) are issuing an urgent call to carmakers and legislators for greater clarity around the capability of vehicles sold with technology that does more and more driving on behalf of motorists. The call comes in the wake of growing reports of people crashing whilst over-relying on technology which is not yet designed to drive the car independently. 
Bicycle helmets have been shown to reduce the risk of head injuries in cycling, but, until now, consumers who want to buy one that offers the best protection have had little information to go on. A new ratings program, based on collaborative research by Virginia Tech and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, fixes that. 
Cellbond has released the new Advanced Pedestrian Legform Impactor (aPLI), suitable for tests with both high and low bumper vehicles, to the global Automotive Passive Safety Testing market. Cellbond have been working on the aPLI project since 2016 in collaboration with JAMA, JARI and ISO/TC22/SC36/WG5&WG6. 
ZF announced it will team with Mobileye to launch the S-Cam4 family of advanced cameras in 2018. The ZF S-Cam4 camera family includes a single lens, mono-camera designed to help meet updated test protocols such as Euro NCAP pedestrian triggered automatic emergency braking (AEB), including a crossing bicycle AEB test. 
Recent crash tests of midsize SUVs by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety featured a range of problems, including structural collapse, an airbag nondeployment, hard hits to the dummy's head and an open door. Still, 6 of the 8 vehicles managed to earn a good or acceptable rating for passenger-side small overlap front protection. 
The latest market analysis by independent vehicle safety authority, ANCAP, has revealed a ten-fold increase in the standard fitment of autonomous emergency braking (AEB) in just over two years. ANCAP has been tracking the availability status and market penetration of AEB across the Australian light vehicle market since December 2015 when just 3 per cent of new vehicles sold offered the autonomous braking feature as standard. Today, that figure has increased to 31 per cent. 
The Japanese National Agency for Automotive Safety and Victims‘ Aid (NASVA) has released new results for the fiscal year 2017 (FY2017) (April 1, 2017 - March 31, 2018). Detailed results as well as description of tests are available in Japanese in the 2018 Guidebooks.
The new type-approval regulation for motor vehicles (Regulation (EU) 2018/858) was published in the Official Journal of the European Union. These regulation will be repealing the current type-approval directive (Framework Directive 2007/46/EC) from September 1st, 2020.
