Using real-world Crash Data to develop new Crash Tests

article imageCrash tests at the IIHS Vehicle Research Center normally follow the same procedures day in and day out to produce comparable results for vehicle ratings. Lately, however, IIHS engineers and technicians have been mixing it up as they try out new test configurations - not for current ratings but for the evaluations of the future. Researchers suggest a Rethink of “banned” Chest Clips on Child Car Restraints in Australia

article imageResearch using child crash test dummies has shown, for the first time, a potential safety benefit in using plastic chest clips on child car restraints, as they keep shoulder straps together, reducing the risk of serious injury in a crash. Despite chest clips being widely used in the United States, they do not meet Australian safety standards according to AS/NZS 1754 due to concerns they may cause neck injuries in a crash.

Autonomous Driving: Making Road Tests much easier - A Drive-in Movie for the Vehicle Radar

article imageSensors in autonomous vehicles have to be extremely reliable, since in the future motorists will no longer constantly monitor traffic while underway. In the past these sensors were subjected to arduous road tests. The new ATRIUM testing device from Fraunhofer Institute for High Frequency Physics and Radar Techniques FHR now makes it possible to move a large portion of these road tests to the laboratory. ATRIUM puts on a show for the vehicle’s radar sensor, generating artificial scenery that comes very close to the actual conditions encountered in street traffic.
