Rear-seat Occupant Protection hasn't kept Pace with the FrontA new IIHS study of frontal crashes in which belted rear-seat passengers were killed or seriously injured suggests that more sophisticated restraint systems are needed in the back. Front-seat occupants have benefited greatly from advancements in restraints. Back-seat occupants haven't benefited from this technology to the same extent.

Using real-world Crash Data to develop new Crash TestsCrash tests at the IIHS Vehicle Research Center normally follow the same procedures day in and day out to produce comparable results for vehicle ratings. Lately, however, IIHS engineers and technicians have been mixing it up as they try out new test configurations - not for current ratings but for the evaluations of the future. The goal is to come up with a draft protocol for a new evaluation by the end of the year and incorporate a new test into IIHS ratings for 2022.

Researchers suggest a Rethink of “banned” Chest Clips on Child Car Restraints in AustraliaResearch using child crash test dummies has shown, for the first time, a potential safety benefit in using plastic chest clips on child car restraints, as they keep shoulder straps together, reducing the risk of serious injury in a crash. Despite chest clips being widely used in the United States, they do not meet Australian safety standards according to AS/NZS 1754 due to concerns they may cause neck injuries in a crash.

Autonomous Driving: Making Road Tests much easier - A Drive-in Movie for the Vehicle RadarSensors in autonomous vehicles have to be extremely reliable, since in the future motorists will no longer constantly monitor traffic while underway. In the past these sensors were subjected to arduous road tests. The new ATRIUM testing device from Fraunhofer Institute for High Frequency Physics and Radar Techniques FHR now makes it possible to move a large portion of these road tests to the laboratory. ATRIUM puts on a show for the vehicle’s radar sensor, generating artificial scenery that comes very close to the actual conditions encountered in street traffic.

American Automobile Association calls for U.S. Standard for Adaptive Driving Beam HeadlightsNew research from the American Automobile Association (AAA) found that European vehicles equipped with adaptive driving beam headlights (ADB) increase roadway lighting by as much as 86 percent when compared to U.S. low beam headlights. AAA believes this technology, not presently allowed by U.S. standards, is the first real solution to providing more light for drivers at night and AAA supports changes in the law to allow ADB to be used to its full capability.

EU Parliament approves EU Rules requiring life-saving Technologies in VehiclesSafety features such as intelligent speed assistance and advanced emergency-braking system will have to be installed in new vehicles as from May 2022. The regulation, approved by Parliament with 578 votes to 30, and 25 abstentions, will now be submitted for approval to the EU Council of Ministers.
