Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Applus+ IDIADA to develop Facilities for Environmental Testing of Highly Automated VehiclesMitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Applus+ IDIADA agreed to collaborate in developing facilities for controlled environmental testing of highly automated vehicles (AVs). A combination of virtual and physical settings will be developed to efficiently test AVs in controlled weather and lighting conditions (including snow, fog, rain and glare).

Mercedes-Benz further expands Car-to-X CommunicationLarge potholes are a safety hazard, because if drivers do not recognise them in time, they can no longer take evasive action or reduce their speed. There is also a risk of damage to tyres and the suspension system. In the worst case, accidents can happen. Mercedes-Benz is now increasing safety with additional Car-to-X functions.

ZKW and Partners develop new Micromirror Modules for dynamic Light FunctionsTogether with research partners Silicon Austrian Labs, Evatec, EV Group and TDK Electronics, ZKW is working on "micromirror" technology. This microelectromechanical system (MEMS) consists of a chip with integrated, microscopic mirror mechanics. The micromirror can be pivoted around two axes by means of piezoelectricity and enables a laser beam to be directed specifically and precisely.

New 'Digital Twin' of Applus IDIADA Proving Ground supports the growing Use of Simulation in Vehicle Development and TestingrFpro has developed a highly accurate virtual model of Applus IDIADA's proving ground to be used for the development of vehicles in simulation. The digital twin enables manufacturers to accelerate and improve the vehicle development process. It enables the evaluation of systems and vehicles in a fully representative virtual environment both before and after physical prototypes are available for validation on the track.

Making self-driving Cars safer through keener Robot PerceptionAviation became a reality in the early 20th century, but it took 20 years before the proper safety precautions enabled widespread adoption of air travel. Today, the future of fully autonomous vehicles is similarly cloudy, due in large part to safety concerns. To accelerate that timeline, graduate student Heng "Hank" Yang and his collaborators have developed the first set of "certifiable perception" algorithms, which could help protect the next generation of self-driving vehicles - and the vehicles they share the road with.

How do First Responders handle increasing Vehicle Automation? The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) released a new report that examines how law enforcement officials and other first responders as well as crash scene investigators can better prepare for automated vehicle technology by highlighting curriculum recommendations to improve training on rapidly changing safety protocols. The report was produced by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) and made possible by a grant from State Farm®. read more ...
