The German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft are funding the project with around 750,000 euros over a period of three years in a newly launched research transfer program. It is the first funding program of the DFG with the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, which deals with the direct transfer of research results to industrial applications.

"We're working on how to make storing very large amounts of data efficient, especially in the context of autonomous driving," Dr. Matthias Jung, scientist at Fraunhofer IESE says. "Another big problem besides the efficient storage and the large bandwidth required when accessing the data is, that in safety-critical applications such as autonomous driving for cost reasons, memory components built for the consumer sector, e.g. for smartphones, are used. Appropriate measures must therefore be taken to increase the reliability of these memories, "says project leader Professor Dr. Ing. Norbert Wehn from the TU Kaiserslautern.
