Virtual Benchmarking - Process, Tools, Results
"Virtual Product Development" has already been established completely within the automotive industry today and the development processes can no longer be imagined without it. A comparison with the competitive products is still carried out, however, on the basis of hardware and real products - the advantages of the virtual product development remain unused. Even though hardware benchmarking methods are well established in the automotive industry, the quantity and quality of information generated is very restricted. Especially the limited insight in the performance and limited understanding about the design features could be disappointing. Hardware benchmarking is giving a status, but usually no explanations. Virtual benchmarking offers all advantages of the virtual development and gives a deep insight in the benchmarked structure or product. The objective of this course is to give an overview of the "Virtual Benchmarking" process from hardware to correlation and some examples for application. The virtual benchmarking process enables a consistent virtualization of the real hardware. The main steps are:
- Purchase a "best in class" vehicle
- Perform hardware tests
- 3D scanning
- Preparation of scanning data
- Creation of material cards from testing
- Generation of FE models
- Creation of ready to run CAE inputs
- Correlation of CAE simulation results to test
This workshop is suited for everybody who is intererested in using virtual benchmarking to compare the performance of own products with best-in-class products.
The workshop participants will learn about the individual tasks, technologies and terminology along the full process of virtual benchmarking.
- 3D Scanning
- Model preparation
- Simulation & Correlation
Dr.-Ing. Martin Müller-Bechtel
TECOSIM Technische Simulation GmbH
Dr. Martin Müller-Bechtel studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Munich. From 1994 to 1998 he worked as a research assistant at the institute for mechanics at the same university and received a PhD in mechanics. Since 1999 he has worked at TECOSIM as a simulation engineer in the fields of crash simulation and NVH optimization. Since 2006 he has been a major contributor to TECOSIM's proprietary virtual benchmarking process TEC|BENCH.
