Occupant Safety Side

Occupant safety side is one of the fields that are highly regulated by the authorities. Many legal and consumer requirements are already in place to regulate the occupant injury value in the event of side crash. Unlike the front crash scenario where the space between the vehicle interior such as instrument panel, knee bolster, etc. and the front impact dummy is large, there is only a little space left between side crash dummy and interior trim in the event of side impact. Also, the side structure plays a more crucial role in this load case. Therefore, there are different challenges to design an effective side restraint system, particularly the integration of airbags with the vehicle interior. This seminar aims to provide a detailed explanation on the occupant safety side to the audience. We begin by introducing the side dummy injury criterion so that the audience would be able to interpret the occupant injury value. Overview of restraint components mainly side impact airbags, interior trims and seat will be discussed. In addition, the integration of the restraint components will also be covered in this seminar. Lastly, the design and optimization strategies for side restraint system as well as the common side restraint issues faced during the vehicle development will be discussed.

  • Side dummy injury criterion: Terminology, injury risk curve, overview of occupant loading, occupant protection criteria
  • Side restraint components: Overview of restraint components, working principles for side impact airbags, interior trims and seat
  • Side restraint system: Integration of restraint components for head, chest, abdomen and pelvis restraint, overview of restrained dummy kinematics
  • Design and optimization strategies: Overview of the market requirements, design strategies for side structure, side thorax airbag, curtain airbag, optimization for airbag (shape, vent, folding) and interior trims
