Occupant Safety Side
Occupant safety side is one of the fields that are highly regulated by the authorities. Many legal and consumer requirements are already in place to regulate the occupant injury value in the event of side crash. Unlike the front crash scenario where the space between the vehicle interior such as instrument panel, knee bolster, etc. and the front impact dummy is large, there is only a little space left between side crash dummy and interior trim in the event of side impact. Also, the side structure plays a more crucial role in this load case. Therefore, there are different challenges to design an effective side restraint system, particularly the integration of airbags with the vehicle interior. This seminar aims to provide a detailed explanation on the occupant safety side to the audience. We begin by introducing the side dummy injury criterion so that the audience would be able to interpret the occupant injury value. Overview of restraint components mainly side impact airbags, interior trims and seat will be discussed. In addition, the integration of the restraint components will also be covered in this seminar. Lastly, the design and optimization strategies for side restraint system as well as the common side restraint issues faced during the vehicle development will be discussed.

Chye Hock Tok
Chye Hock Tok holds a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering Degree. He started his career in the field of vehicle passive safety and now has approximately 11 years of working experience with international automotive engineering consultancy firms as well as world leading restraint system supplier. He has undertaken numerous vehicle passive safety development programs for international OEMs, particularly in the area of front and side occupant safety. He now holds a Senior Engineer position in ARRK | P+Z Engineering and is also responsible for the CAE topics in Southeast Asia.
Dr.-Ing. Quanji Cai
Dr.-Ing. Quanji Cai studied Automotive Engineering at Tsinghua University in China and got her master and doctorate degree at the department of computation in engineering at Technische Universität München in Germany. She has a solid theoretical foundation of finite element analysis and nearly 10 years of practical experience in solving complex engineering problems. She has led the team to successfully complete passive safety projects of several well-known international OEMs. She is now team leader of passive safety department at ARRK Engineering and responsible for structural crash and pedestrian protection projects.
