 Tesla, Mercedes and Škoda score a Touchdown in Euro NCAP’s latest Safety TestsEuro NCAP releases safety ratings of six new cars. Four of those have achieved five stars: the much talked about Tesla Model 3, the new Škoda Scala, the Mercedes-Benz B-Class and the latest GLE from the same stable. The new Kia Ceed and crossover SUV DS 3 Crossback rated four stars with equipment offered as standard but both make it into five stars territory when equipped with an optional safety pack.

Cars built in the last decade have been shown to be safer than older models, including in the most common types of crashes – frontal collisions. However, a new study conducted by researchers at the University of Virginia’s Center for Applied Biomechanics shows that women wearing seat belts are significantly more likely to suffer injury than their male counterparts.

China Automobile Engineering Research Institute becomes the first co-approved test facility outside of Europe by Euro NCAP. It was approved to conduct Euro NCAP related crash tests in China with accredited Europe test labs. The co-approved test facility is located in Chongqing, China.
Although standardized crash tests have made car journeys considerably safer over the past 30 years, they have not been totally comprehensive – especially not for oblique frontal collisions. Researchers at Chalmers have developed a crash test dummy that now sets a new, life-saving standard for safety in passenger cars.

In the scope of the "14th PraxisConference for Pedestrian Protection" Dr. Michael Weyde (Engineering office Priester & Weyde) reported on the biofidelic dummy as a vulnerable road user in full-scale crash tests. In the course of the event, the CTS-crash team were also present on site. Crash test manager Ralf Bührmann and group leader Kai Schulte demonstrated live two pedestrian crash tests.
Euro NCAP publishes several updated protocols. The changes reflect in particular the new requirements of the Euro NCAP program came into force on January 2019 and coming into force as of January 2020. The current versions are available via the following links at 
The new pre-braking system M=BRAKE for crash test facilities is able to run pre-defined braking profiles in sled and vehicle tests with a high degree of precision and reproducible results. It’s the world’s first subsystem that recreates the intervention of brake assist systems prior to an actual crash, integrating it into the crash test run. The driver’s braking maneuvers can also be individually simulated with little effort.
NVIDIA works with key international organizations that are formulating standards and regulations for automated vehicles. These include the International Standards Organization (ISO), the United Nations Economic Commission of Europe (UNECE), National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the European Association auf Automotive Suppliers (CLEPA).
The Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research signes the annual grant agreement with Global NCAP for the project of ASEAN NCAP. The signing ceremony was held in Eindhoven, the Netherlands in conjunction with the ESV 2019 Conference. Mr. David Ward, President and CEO signed on behalf of Global NCAP whilst MIROS was represented by its Director-General, Dr. Siti Zaharah Ishak, who is also the Chairperson of ASEAN NCAP.
In a comprehensive joint study, Henkel and RLE International have examined and validated the potential of high-performance structural foam for lightweighting in automotive body and closure parts. The study has revealed that fiber reinforced polymer components with structural foam ribbing and reinforcements can save more than 40 kg of weight per car vs. conventional all-metal designs.
CTAG-IDIADA expand its passive safety testing and engineering capabilities with the acquisition of a test complex near Frankfurt, Germany. The facility, used by German and international vehicle and system manufacturers, is supported by a team of more than 35 experienced professionals and has state-of-the-art testing equipment with a complete set of dummies that includes THOR and World SID.
