Euro NCAP releases safety ratings of six new cars. Four of those have achieved five stars: the much talked about Tesla Model 3, the new Škoda Scala, the Mercedes-Benz B-Class and the latest GLE from the same stable. The new Kia Ceed and crossover SUV DS 3 Crossback rated four stars with equipment offered as standard but both make it into five stars territory when equipped with an optional safety pack.

However, a new study conducted by researchers at the University of Virginia’s Center for Applied Biomechanics shows that women wearing seat belts are significantly more likely to suffer injury than their male counterparts.

The NTSB releases Highway Accident Brief 19/06 detailing the agency’s investigation of the Nov. 8, 2017, minor collision between a commercial truck and an autonomous shuttle in Las Vegas. The truck driver’s actions and the autonomous vehicle attendant’s lack of easy access to a manual controller are cited in the probable cause for the collision.

In the course of the event, the CTS-crash team were also present on site. Crash test manager Ralf Bührmann and group leader Kai Schulte demonstrated live two pedestrian crash tests.

The new pre-braking system M=BRAKE for crash test facilities is able to run pre-defined braking profiles in sled and vehicle tests with a high degree of precision and reproducible results. It’s the world’s first subsystem that recreates the intervention of brake assist systems prior to an actual crash, integrating it into the crash test run. The driver’s braking maneuvers can also be individually simulated with little effort.

The signing ceremony was held in Eindhoven, the Netherlands in conjunction with the ESV 2019 Conference. In a comprehensive joint study, Henkel and RLE International have examined and validated the potential of high-performance structural foam for lightweighting in automotive body and closure parts. The study has revealed that fiber reinforced polymer components with structural foam ribbing and reinforcements can save more than 40 kg of weight per car vs. conventional all-metal designs.
