EMMA4Drive Dynamic Human Model for more Safety and Comfort in Autonomous Vehicles

article imageResearchers of the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM and company fleXstructures together with scientists from the Institute for Engineering and Computational Mechanics (ITM) at the University of Stuttgart are developing a muscle-activated human model. This model dynamically simulates the interaction of human body parts and the vehicle seat during driving maneuvers. The resulting software prototype, EMMA4Drive, will be used as a digital image of the occupant and will analyze and evaluate his safety and ergonomics during driving maneuvers.

Using Simpleware Software to automate Orthopedic Revision Planning

article imageOrthopedic revision surgeries are typically needed if an implanted orthopedic device fails or causes complications due to factors like general wear and tear, further injury, and/or infection. Although proportionally rare for procedures like total hip and knee replacements, revision surgeries can be needed to address specific patient problems and replace faulty implants. Planning for a revision surgery typically begins with X-rays and other testing to identify clinically relevant issues. However, due to the complexity of revision surgeries, 3D image scans (MRI and/or CT) may be needed to get a deeper understanding of the patient s specific anatomy and the implant that needs to be removed. This approach helps the surgeon consider sizing and positioning of the new implant and create templates to inform their surgical planning.

New Software Application for Thin Wall Section Analysis from American Iron and Steel Institute

article imageAHSS Advanced High-Strength Steel grades offer increased performance in yield and tensile strength. However, to fully utilize this increased strength, automotive beam sections must be designed carefully to avoid buckling of the plate elements in the section. A new software application, Geometric Analysis of Sections GAS2.0, offered by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), is a tool to aid in this design effort.
