Noise is an unavoidable by-product of a driving car. More and more engineers, from various departments, are faced with NVH design responsibilities while sometimes lacking a solid background in acoustics. This seminar presents the basic concepts of acoustics illustrated with real life examples from the automotive engineering world. Acoustic design projects are heavily relying on CAE techniques. Each lecture will be illustrated with relevant numerical models created with Hexagon's Actran acoustic finite element software program.
Some research projects emerge to answer a theoretical question. Some arise to solve a researcher s own problems. The latter was the case for Tufan Kumbasar, the director of the Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems Laboratory and a professor of control and automation engineering at Istanbul Technical University. Typically, a professor teaching control theory draws an FCA on a whiteboard. To show and analyze the dynamic behavior of the system how it behaves with various inputs the professor draws a plot next to the block diagram. But that takes time, and the plot is redrawn for each change to the FCA.
The partnership focuses on the introduction of innovative technologies such as virtual vehicle concept design, driving simulators and model-based calibration and testing. The partnership between the two companies will primarily serve to introduce state-of-the-art technologies for digital vehicle development, such as virtual vehicle concept design, driver-in-the-loop (DiL) simulations and model-based calibration and testing. TCD and AVL are pursuing the common goal of further increasing efficiency and quality in the development process.

The optimization of the vibroacoustic behavior of a product is one of the most important aspects in product development. Acoustic engineers currently use an array of sophisticated methods for their analysis. These include complex testing equipment or powerful simulation tools. However, the NVH behavior is typically very complex and holistic models that are easy to use remain elusive. That is why acoustic engineers still primarily rely on their experience to analyze result data, find root causes and to recommend suitable design changes. As the amount of available test and simulation data increases, the amount of time spent to analyze this data has become a major bottleneck during product development.
To ensure that steel delivers what it promises, its microstructure is analyzed in detail to detect weak points at an early stage. Today, this is largely done manually. Component manufacturers have wanted an automated image analysis method for some time. In a cooperative project, Fraunhofer IWM has now developed such a method based on neural networks. It delivers reliable and reproducible results and is a fundamental building block for the end-to-end digitization of steel processing in the sense of Industry 4.0.
