The SafetyCompanion contains more than 70 pages of SafetyWissen (tables & graphs summarizing regulations and other requirements in vehicle safety), including several all new pages and more than 50 updated pages. IIHS prepares to test Pedestrian Detection Systems

article imageIn November 2018, IIHS shared with manufacturers the protocol engineers use to evaluate automatic emergency braking systems that can detect and brake for pedestrians in preparation for the early 2019 release of the first IIHS ratings of this feature. The pedestrian autobrake test is the fourth crash avoidance evaluation in the Institute's battery of safety tests, alongside ratings of front crash prevention, rear crash prevention and headlights.

Panda, Wrangler off the Pace in latest Safety Ratings

article imageEuro NCAP releases the safety ratings of nine cars. The Audi Q3, BMW X5, Hyundai Santa Fe, Jaguar I-PACE, Peugeot 508, Volvo V60 and its partner, the Volvo S60, all achieve a maximum five-star rating. However, two FCA vehicles – FIAT’s aging Panda and Jeep’s all-new Wrangler – get zero stars and one star respectively.

57 Models earn IIHS Awards for 2019

article imageNearly five dozen 2019 models meet stricter criteria to qualify for a 2019 TOP SAFETY PICK+ or TOP SAFETY PICK award from the Institute. The 30 first-tier "plus" award winners earn the highest rating for passenger-side protection in a small overlap front crash and have good-rated available headlights, while the 27 winners of the second-tier award qualify with an acceptable or higher rating in the newest IIHS crash test and the nighttime headlight evaluation.
