IIHS announces tougher Criteria for 2020 Awards

article imageGood or acceptable headlights need to be standard equipment next year for a vehicle to qualify for TOP SAFETY PICK+, the highest award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. In addition, front crash prevention that earns at least an advanced rating in both the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations will have to be available. Previously, only the vehicle-to-vehicle rating was required.

Researchers identify new modifiable Safety Risk in Cars for Children

article imageA series of crash-test simulations have found that the shape and height of arm rests in the rear seat of cars can reduce the effectiveness child restraints during side impact crashes. The study by Julie Brown, co-director of the Transurban Road Safety Centre at Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA), found that the position of arm rests can influence the likelihood of head injuries during a crash, even when a child is correctly strapped into their car seat.

Road Map for Safer Vehicles 2030

article image2020 will be a very significant year for global road safety and a great opportunity for India to demonstrate its growing leadership especially in vehicle safety. On 19 - 20 February 2020 the 3rd Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety will be held in Stockholm, Sweden. This meeting of transport and health ministers is expected to adopt a new target to halve road deaths and serious injuries by 2030.

Revised General Safety Regulation published

article imageThe revised General Safety Regulation (Regulation 2019/2144/EU) entered into force on 5 January 2020. The new rules require that, as of July 2022, all new vehicle models introduced on the European market are equipped with advanced safety features, such as technology to detect drivers' drowsiness and distraction, improved impact zone to mitigate the risk of injury to pedestrians and cyclists, systems reducing dangerous blind spots on trucks and buses, and data recording technology.
