Autoliv and POC have joined forces to study and develop bicycle and e-bike helmets equipped with airbag technology to improve head protection and reduce the consequences of an impact. Head injuries alone account for half of the deadly bicyclist injuries. Although it is established that helmets are beneficial to head safety, the latest Bicycle Safety report by Swedish insurance company Folksam makes the case that helmet absorption efficiency could still be greatly improved, especially when collisions occur with a car at speeds above 20 km/h (12 mph).

"Automakers often assume that drivers want as much technology as they can get in their vehicles," says Alexandra Mueller, the survey's primary designer. "But few studies have examined actual consumer opinions about partial driving automation."

The U.S. Department of Transportation s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration finalized a rule that updates two Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards to improve protection for drivers and passengers in light vehicles in the event of a rear underride crash. These crashes, which are often deadly, occur when the front end of a vehicle crashes into the back of a larger vehicle, such as a large trailer or semi-trailer, and slides under that vehicle.

Both models are the cheapest sedans from the manufacturer that consumers can buy in their respective markets.

Amongst the five-star winners are two new cross-over SUVs, the Alfa Romeo Tonale and the latest KIA Sportage and one full electric car, the Cupra Born. MPV partner models Mercedes-Benz T-Class and Mercedes-Benz Citan Tourer also qualified for five stars. Finally, the Toyota s Aygo X supermini and BMW s all-electric i4 earned four stars.

Latin NCAP welcomes the upcoming update of Decree 026 of the Chilean Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications, that was recently submitted to the General Comptroller Office for its final decision. This update will include NCAP’s safety rating for new vehicle models sold in the country. Chile thus will become the first country in the region to include NCAP star ratings in their safety label.

read more ... The UN Road Safety Fund is proud to support the UN High-level Meeting on Global Road Safety and hosted its first pledging event on 30 June 2022 at the UN Headquarters in New York. In total, 16 partners pledged over US$ 15 million to fund vital road safety projects in low- and middle-income countries during 2022-2025. Countries including Armenia, Iran, Jamaica, Kenya, Nepal and Qatar have added their voices to the call for increased financing to the Fund.

read more ... The federal government should expedite plans to require speed limiters on large trucks and extend the requirement to medium-duty trucks, IIHS urged in a recent regulatory comment. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requested comments on a proposal to require devices that limit the top speed on commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating over 26,000 pounds. A specific top speed would be determined later in the rulemaking process.
