In addition to learning platforms and e-lectures, virtual and augmented reality technologies are becoming increasingly important in the engineering sector. The IAT of the University of Stuttgart, partner of the Fraunhofer IAO, is developing concepts in the "VIRAI" project on how virtual reality (VR) can be increasingly used in teaching.

Additive manufacturing has the potential to open up new dimensions in lightweight design. At present, however, the available aluminum alloys do not meet the high crash performance requirements of automotive industry, as the current processes are primarily producing high-strength materials.
When people think of crash tests, they likely imagine a dummy behind the wheel of a car that is launched into a brick wall. As exciting and important as these assessments are, they are the tip of a very large iceberg.
The three-year research project "DNA casting - continuous numerical design of cast components along the process chain", which started on November 1, 2019, is intended to eliminate this shortcoming and link individual disciplines with each other. The aim is to enable a more efficient and cost-effective development of high-performance, cyclically stressed cast components, for example for the wind energy sector or large machine construction.
Simulation software specialist rFpro, has created a highly accurate digital twin of Mcity, a purpose-built facility at the University of Michigan for testing connected and automated vehicles and technologies under controlled, realistic conditions. The digital twin enables vehicle manufacturers and technology suppliers to accelerate development using simulation.
VI-grade announced that it has expanded its product line with all NVH Simulation Software and NVH Driving Simulators from its sister company Brüel & Kjær. The move opens many opportunities to combine technologies from Brüel & Kjaer and VI-grade, in order to deliver unique, high-value solutions to the automotive market.
Lubricated shafts, bearings or gears only run properly if the components slide on a perfect lubricating film and generate as little friction, wear and energy loss as possible. To do this, engineers need to know the behavior of the lubricating film in tribo-contact, something that can hardly be measured by experiments.
Application for Automated Design & Optimization of Vehicle Ergonomics (ADOPTIVE) aims at studying physical vehicle user interaction and develop methodology for advanced vehicle ergonomics analyses within simulation tools.
