The University of Toronto's Blue Sky Solar Racing team is developing a solar racer designed to capture enough sun rays to be a top contender in next year's World Solar Challenge (WSC). The team of more than 60 members consists mainly of engineering, computer science, business and marketing students. Despite their different courses, they all gain practical simulation experience.
Optical measurement during loading records the mechanical behavior of the specimen. The data from the innovative test procedure simplifies the selection and fitting of a model suitable for the material, which allows reliable extrapolation to 3D tensile. This approach is critical for safe and cost-effective plastic tank design.

MAN Energy Solutions and Fraunhofer UMSICHT have received a grant from the Ministry of Economics, Industry, Climate Protection and Energy (MWIKE) of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia for the concept phase of the Campus for Hydrogen Technologies Oberhausen - in short: HydrOB®. The funds provided will flow into the detailed planning and preparation of the envisaged H2 Competence Center. In addition, MAN and UMSICHT would like to develop the concept of a cloud infrastructure and promote the digital networking of demonstration projects ("living labs").
Powder-based laser beam melting (LPBF) is probably the most well-known AM process and has great potential for industrial application. How can the limited range of materials for this process be overcome and the market potential further expanded? The IWM of the RWTH Aachen and the Fraunhofer IFAM investigated this question in the "LPBF powder construction kit" project funded by the AiF. As a result, a sustainable solution for the individual and robust production of metal powder mixtures was developed, so that the user can reach the desired material properties with a small selection of metal powders and adjust the alloys flexibly.
On July 21, the world's first electric cargo bike with a quick charging function and recuperation was presented at the University of Ulm. Two vehicle demonstrators, 3m long and weighing 170kg, are the result of a four-year research project coordinated by the Institute for Measurement, Control and Microtechnology. The project's co-applicant is the Institute for Vehicle Concepts of the German Aerospace Center (DLR-FK). The Biberach company Elektromaschinenbau GmbH (EMB) was also involved. The new vehicle was presented to the Baden-Württemberg Ministry for Economics, Labor and Tourism at the end of the project on Thursday, July 21st. The state ministry funded the project with around one million euros.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM develops innovative approaches to design for e-mobility. In the "MultiskalenBEV" project, researchers are concentrating on tailor-made and intelligent solutions in the virtual product development of e-vehicles. The project is funded by the Ministry of Science and Health of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate.
