Seminar: Introduction to Impact Biomechanics and Human Body Models

To prevent human injury in traffic it is necessary to understand the biomechanics of impact. This can be done through experimental studies with volunteers or post-mortem human subjects. Mechanical anthropometric crash test dummies have been developed to provide tools for development and assessment of safety systems for specific loading scenarios. With increasing computer capacity, human body models have become popular tools. This course covers the basics of impact biomechanics, such as human anatomy, population variance, mechanical properties of human tissues, and injury criteria. Finally, it focuses on computational models of the human body and their use to develop and evaluate safety systems. Karin Brolin is an internationally renowned expert in impact biomechanics and human modeling.

Charging Through Electric Motor Development with Simulation

article imageIn the shift toward electrification, consumers are clearly aware of the challenges that come with this relatively new and emerging technology, including driving range and the charging infrastructure needed to support long-distance travel. Batteries are a key element in the rapid adoption of electric mobility, as they directly impact how far electric vehicles (EVs) can go on a single charge. However, EVs - and hybrid EVs, for that matter - are really driven by not one, but three important enabling automotive technologies: e-drives, batteries, and vehicle control systems.

Structural Analysis of the Hub of a Rental Kart and Optimization Through Mesh Morphing

article imageIn his thesis Lorenzo Mazzaferro collaborated with one of the leading companies in Kart production, CRG. Lorenzo was tasked by CRG to conduct a study on a specific component of a rental Kart: the rear hub. This component plays a crucial role in facilitating the rotation between the driving shaft and the tire. As the hub undergoes motion, it experiences significant loads. The objective of this project is to perform a structural analysis of the rear hub and enhance its performance by reducing internal stresses. To achieve this, the RBF Morph software is utilized for optimization.

Virtual Laboratory Calculates Optimal Composition of Lubricants

article imageMechanical bearings and gears, such as those found in electric vehicles and wind turbines, are usually supplied with lubricants to reduce friction and wear. However, electrical voltages can be applied to these components, impairing the functioning of the lubricants to such an extent that damage occurs to the tribological contacts. Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials IWM have developed a virtual lubricant laboratory in the joint project "Lube.Life" that can be used to predict the effects of electric fields on the stability of lubricants. This makes it possible to tailor formulations of new lubricants.
