To prevent human injury in traffic accidents it is necessary to understand the biomechanics of impact. This can be achieved through experimental studies with volunteers or post-mortem human subjects. Mechanical anthropometric crash test dummies have been developed to provide tools for the development and assessment of safety systems under specific loading scenarios. With increasing computer capacity, human body models have become popular tools. This course covers the basics of impact biomechanics, such as human anatomy, population variance, mechanical properties of human tissues, and injury criteria. Finally, it focuses on computational models of the human body and their use in developing and evaluating safety systems. Karin Brolin is an internationally renowned expert in impact biomechanics and human modeling.

Fraunhofer IWM has developed and commissioned a micro-tensile testing apparatus with an integrated high pressure hydrogen chamber that can be used to perform mechanical quasi-static or cyclic (fatigue) tests and fracture mechanics investigations on samples measuring just a few millimeters in size. The transferability of the test results from micro to macro samples is guaranteed. Micro sample testing technology opens up new possibilities for efficiently and reliably evaluating the mechanical properties of both small and thin-walled components, as well as local weak points in material structures and weld seams in large components.

It combines technical precision, realistic vehicle modeling, and racing-specific setups in a solution designed for those who demand more than gaming platforms can offer.
How cracks propagate in components is crucial to their safety and reliability. To meet this challenge, researchers have developed various numerical and theoretical approaches. The extended finite element method (XFEM) maps crack discontinuities using localized enrichment functions without recreating the mesh. This effective approach accurately captures local singularities and the branching of complex cracks. In parallel, energy-based criteria based on J and G integrals of linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) quantify the energy release rate and the toughness of the material under quasi-static elastic conditions. These methods are primarily based on LEFM theory, which has proven itself for brittle materials or small defects. However, they quickly reach their limits with elastoplastic materials.
Ansys Mechanical can be used to model the three known heat transfer mechanisms in a thermal simulation. In heat conduction, energy is transferred through molecular contact or electron transport, typically in solids. Convection describes heat transfer through the movement of liquids or gases. Radiation transfers heat through electromagnetic waves and does not require a medium.
Autonomous vehicles (AVs) are built on sensors. Cameras, lidar, and radar act as the vehicle's eyes and ears, feeding perception systems with the data they need to understand the environment. If these sensors fail or if the vehicle's software misunderstands them, safety is at risk. Relying only on real-world testing to ensure sensor performance and the (functional) safety of sensor data is cost-intensive. That's why high-fidelity sensor simulation is no longer optional. It has become a cornerstone of how the industry validates AV and ADAS systems.
Real-world thermal-fluid systems are inherently nonlinear and operated dynamically, with temperature, pressure, and flow intricately interdependent. These complex interactions often elude traditional testing methods, which struggle to replicate the full spectrum of operating conditions. While physical testing yields valuable insights, it remains time-intensive, expensive, and constrained in scope limiting its effectiveness for comprehensive system validation.
Autonomous driving in urban traffic is a challenge. Unlike driving on highways, situations in cities are much more complex and often less clear. People are out and about on foot, by bike, or on e-scooters. They are much less protected in accidents than people in vehicles. At the same time, parked and maneuvering vehicles or intersections are not always completely visible.
