India approves Draft GSR Notification to introduce Bharat NCAP

Union minister for Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari has approved the Draft GSR Notification to introduce Bharat NCAP. It is proposed to insert a new rule 126E in CMVR (Central Motor Vehicles Rules), 1989 regarding the Bharat New Car Assessment Program (BNCAP). Also a draft version of the Bharat NCAP test protocol was published.

NHTSA improves Child Safety Seat Testing Standards with Final Rule on Side Impact Protection

article imageThe U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued the Final Rule FMVSS 213 Child Restraint Systems - Side Impact Protection that updates testing requirements for child safety seats to improve the protection of children during side-impact crashes. The rule is a major advance in protecting children from serious injury in traffic crashes.

NHTSA releases Initial Data on Safety Performance of Advanced Vehicle Technologies

article imageAs part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s efforts to increase roadway safety and encourage innovation, the NHTSA published the initial round of data it has collected through its Standing General Order issued last year and initial accompanying reports summarizing this data. The SAE Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems summary report is available here, while the SAE Levels 3-5 automated driving systems summary report is available here.

16th Annual Road Safety Performance Index Report

article imageETSC pubslihes the 16th Annual Road Safety Performance Index (PIN) Report. The EU27 collectively reduced the number of road deaths by 31% over the period 2011-2021, from 28,865 in 2011 to 19,823 in 2021. There were 57,095 fewer deaths on EU roads over the last decade than there would have been if deaths had continued at the same level as in 2011.

NHTSA Data on Advanced Vehicle Systems should be standardized

article imageNTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said data released by NHTSA on advanced driver assistance systems and automated driving systems is a welcome first step in NHTSA's efforts to protect the public from potential safety risks involving these systems. Homendy said that while the NTSB will study the data before coming to any conclusions, the fact that the data exists at all is positive. The NTSB has long called for better and more retrievable data in investigating crashes involving vehicles with ADAS and ADS.

Distracted Driving: GHSA, GM release new Report calling for a Culture Change

article imageThe Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) and General Motors (GM) released a new report with a singular goal: Change the social norm around distracted driving to make it completely unacceptable so all road users get home safely. Intersection Assistance Tech shows big Promise for Older Drivers

article imageAdvanced technologies designed to help drivers navigate intersections could address a third of the crashes that cause older driver injuries and fatalities, a new study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety shows. "Left turn assist and other, upcoming intersection-assistance technologies could deliver big safety benefits for drivers in their 70s and 80s," says the paper's author, IIHS Research Associate Aimee Cox.
