 | Is crash testing biased against women? It s a fair question. After all, the safety improvements spurred by vehicle testing have not erased disparities in risk. Although more men than women are killed in crashes, women who are involved in crashes are more likely to be seriously injured than men. And, as some safety advocates have pointed out, the frontal crash tests conducted by IIHS and the government use a crash test dummy that represents an average-size man.

read more ... Euro NCAP publishes its fifth round of safety ratings. The highly anticipated Tesla Model Y did not disappoint and shoots to the top of recently published five-star cars, while the new electric Genesis GV60 continues the 5-star success of the GV70 and GV80 models tested last year. Euro NCAP also tested two newcomers from China s Great Wall Motor Company - the ORA Funky Cat and the WEY Coffee 01, both achieving top marks. Finally, the new Kia Niro is awarded four stars with standard equipment, but five when fitted with the optional safety pack.

UK roads could see self-driving vehicles rolled out by 2025 thanks to new government plans backed by £100 million which prioritise safety through new laws and create thousands of new jobs in the industry. Some vehicles, including cars, coaches and lorries, with self-driving features could be operating on motorways in the next year, and the plans set out new legislation which will allow for the safe wider rollout of self-driving vehicles by 2025.

The projects include a study of human diversity in injury biomechanics, a look at technologies that can help prevent impaired drivers from endangering themselves or others, how to help predict when a driver is at risk of incapacitation or illness before it becomes an emergency and how to more effectively pass the operation of the vehicle between the driver and automation.

read more ... QUT robotics researchers working with Ford Motor Company have found a way to tell an autonomous vehicle which cameras to use when navigating. Professor Michael Milford, Joint Director of the QUT Centre for Robotics and Australian Research Council Laureate Fellow and senior author, said the research comes from a project looking at how cameras and LIDAR sensors, commonly used in autonomous vehicles, can better understand the world around them.

Driverless cars will not eliminate crashes, as lack of real-world testing and over-reliance on technology could lead to unsafe driving behaviours without further training. The government recently announced proposals for self-driving vehicles to be on the roads as soon as next year.
