carhs.training launches new Series of Events on Virtual Testing with an online Event on the Use of Human Models in Pedestrian Protection

Ever more new load cases in homologation procedures and in consumer ratings of new vehicles bring the application of physical tests to the limits of feasibility. Moving testing out of the laboratory and into the computer has therefore been a desire of stakeholders for some time. Now that computer simulation has established itself as a product development tool for design and optimization, its use in the approval process and in NCAP assessments also seems feasible. In this first event on the use of pedestrian protection simulation, carhs.training would like to give an overview of the current status.

Fraunhofer EMI supports Orthopedic Surgery with Virtual Human Model Studies on Cruciate Ligament Injuries

article imageRuptures of the anterior cruciate ligament are among the particularly severe sports injuries and often mean the end of an athlete's career. Fraunhofer EMI was able to prove with calculations of the qualitative load distribution in the knee employing virtual human models that it is not necessarily sufficient in the surgical treatment of a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament to restore only the cruciate ligament itself and the anterolateral ligament (ALL). The findings of this study have been taken up for further research by leading physicians and knee specialists.

Virtual Brain Injury Study identifies Key Factors in potential Nerve-fiber Damage

article imageA supercomputer simulation has reproduced traumatic brain injury (TBI) at a higher level of detail and under more conditions than ever before, identifying key factors in causing strain to brain tissues. The Robert Morris University (RMU) led study, using the Bridges platform at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC), promises a better understanding of TBI that may lead to better means of protecting service members, athletes and the general public.

Bringing Lab Courses to remote Learning Students with Simulation Applications

article imageThe average human attention span is shorter than that of a goldfish. Although a human's attention span may not actually be comparable to that of a goldfish, there is more digital content available than ever before, and the way people are focusing their attention is changing. For many educators, holding the attention of their students became even more difficult in March 2020, when schools (and the world) shut down due to the rapid spread of COVID-19, and many college classes moved online. At the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), Roman Voronov, an associate professor of chemical and biomedical engineering, designed 15 easy-to-use simulation applications to help professors at NJIT virtually teach fundamental engineering concepts and lab courses in an engaging way no matter where the students are based.

Researchers at TU Munich develop hybrid Hand Bike for People with Disabilities - Hybrid Bike enables more Autonomy

article imageIn contrast to the classic bicycle, the hand bike is powered by the arms and is one of the most popular sports devices for paraplegics. But it has one crucial disadvantage: the wheelchair is not within reach, for example, to go shopping or to visit a toilet. The new hybrid design "BikAble," developed at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), combines the functions of sports equipment and wheelchair.
