To prevent human injury in traffic accidents it is necessary to understand the biomechanics of impact. This can be achieved through experimental studies with volunteers or post-mortem human subjects. Mechanical anthropometric crash test dummies have been developed to provide tools for the development and assessment of safety systems under specific loading scenarios. With increasing computer capacity, human body models have become popular tools. This course covers the basics of impact biomechanics, such as human anatomy, population variance, mechanical properties of human tissues, and injury criteria. Finally, it focuses on computational models of the human body and their use in developing and evaluating safety systems. Karin Brolin is an internationally renowned expert in impact biomechanics and human modeling. 
The engineers have developed a self-stabilizing model, comprising a bike and a rider. Using a Riese & Müller Delite Mountain e-mountain bike as a basis, they simulated a ride over potholes in a multi-body simulation. This simulation aimed to show the stress loads on individual components.

Prof. Dr. Michael Moseler, Head of the Tribology Business Unit at the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials IWM in Freiburg and Professor for Simulation of Functional Nanosystems at the University of Freiburg, has been awarded an ERC Advanced Grant worth 2.5 million euros for the research and development of a digital twin that can describe lubrication under high loads and thus predict the design and operating conditions for energy-efficient machines.
For many years now, Fraunhofer IPA has been working with Trumpf in the "Flexible Sheet Metal Production" lab to develop AI-based solutions for direct use in production. The team is now presenting an important result in a publication on the automated optimization of machine parameters for the laser-based cutting of sheet metal.
