Since the mass is one of the main factors influencing the fuel consumption of vehicles, increasing demands to reduce energy usage and CO2 emissions, force the automotive industry to consider the use of alternative designs and new materials. Composite materials have proven their potential to reduce the weight of structures in many applications (e.g. aerospace and motorsports). As composites have a special set-up and behave completely different than traditional materials, engineers must learn how to employ these materials to take advantage of their special characteristics in the design of vehicle structures. In the seminar real world examples are used to create a basic understanding of designing composite structures. Then the theoretical and practical foundations of composite design are explained.
The BMW Group and Mistral AI are partnering to advance the use of AI in crash simulation. The aim is to improve quality, accuracy and speed in complex engineering tasks. The collaboration marks a first step towards scaling domain-specific AI across further areas of vehicle development and the BMW Group value chain.
The new project Viva Plus aims to improve road safety by enabling sex-neutral virtual testing in vehicle safety development. The project will establish an open library of qualified and certified Human Body Models (HBMs), making it possible to evaluate safety performance using both female and male representations.
VIRTUAL VEHICLE will launch the new COMET "Software-Defined Mobility" (SDM) center on January 1, 2027. Approved by the FFG, the research center has a planned research budget of 24 million euros for the first four-year funding period and brings together 44 partners from industry and academia. The focus is on one of the key technological challenges of the coming years: mobility systems are increasingly shaped by software, data, AI, and ongoing updates.
PTC has announced that Mazda Motor Corporation plans to use the PTC Codebeamer® application lifecycle management (ALM) solution to accelerate the development of its software-defined vehicles. Mazda will use Codebeamer to standardize requirements, testing, and validation. This will enable end-to-end traceability throughout the entire development process, while also supporting faster product development cycles and compliance with relevant automotive standards.
Why don't more tests early in the development process automatically lead to faster project implementation or lower costs? In automotive development, the promise of the "shift-left" concept - in which validation measures are moved to earlier phases - has become a widely adopted paradigm. In practice, however, many organizations experience the opposite effect, as complexity increases, additional work is created, and efficiency gains are limited.
With the MaterialsCommons project, a pan-European federated digital infrastructure for materials research and development is being created for the first time. The project, funded by the European Commission under Horizon Europe with 28 million euros, brings together 26 research institutions from 14 countries with over 30 industrial partners, including Bosch, Siemens, ArcelorMittal, Infineon, Voestalpine, and Schaeffler. The goal is to unify Europe's fragmented materials data landscape and accelerate the development of new high-performance materials by a factor of 4.
