The quicker motorcyclists receive assistance, the greater their chances of survival. The risk of being killed in a crash is still 20 times higher for motorcyclists than for car drivers. This has prompted Bosch to develop Help Connect, a digitally connected emergency call system for motorized two-wheelers that speeds up the rescue process.

But autonomous vehicles might prevent only around a third of all crashes if automated systems drive too much like people, according to a new study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

UN Regulation on Automated Lane Keeping Systems is Milestone for safe introduction of Automated Vehicles in TrafficThe UN Regulation establishes strict requirements for Automated Lane Keeping Systems (ALKS) for passenger cars which, once activated, are in primary control of the vehicle. However, the driver can override such systems and can be requested by the system to intervene, at any moment.

Today, car safety is not only about occupant protection and promoting driver assistant systems but also concerns better post-crash safety. As vehicles have become tougher, more complex and alternatively powered, it has become increasingly crucial that first responders know what they can and can t do at the scene of an accident.

Small Cars have high Driver Death RatesDespite manufacturers efforts to make them safer, the smallest late-model cars remain the most dangerous, according to the most recent driver death rates calculated by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety. Small cars and minicars accounted for 15 of the 20 models with the highest death rates for model year 2017, while nearly half of the 20 models with the lowest death rates were luxury SUVs.

But nowadays, all that has changed thanks to crash test dummies: high-tech models of human beings that provide critical input for modern vehicle safety.

Convertibles aren't any riskier than other CarsConvertibles may not look as safe as other vehicles when they re cruising down the highway with the top down, but crash statistics tell a different story, a new IIHS study shows. Despite the relatively flimsy appearance of their roof structures, late-model convertibles are no riskier than nonconvertibles, according to the analysis of crash and fatality rates.

Using Light Signals for safe Communication in future Road TransportWhether with turn signals, hazard warning lights or flashing blue lights, vehicles often use light signals to communicate with other road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists. As part of the EU project interACT, researchers from the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) have worked together with European industry and research partners to develop new solutions that enable automated and networked vehicles to communicate safely and reliably by means of light signals.

SUVs are more Lethal to Pedestrians than CarsThough their designs have changed considerably over the past two decades, late-model SUVs still appear to be more likely to kill pedestrians than cars, a new study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found. Thanks to advances in safety, the number of people killed in motor vehicle crashes in the U.S. has fallen from more than 50,000 in 1980 to 36,560 in 2018. Over the past decade, however, the number of pedestrians killed on American roads has ticked steadily upward.
