Mercedes-Benz is the first automotive company in the world to meet the demanding legal requirements of UN R157 for a Level 3 system. The German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) has granted system approval for this on the basis of the technical approval regulation UN R157, thus paving the way for offering such a system internationally, provided that national legislation allows it.

Using the Labs sled track, rockets propelled the semitractor-trailer at highway speeds into the prototype, an over-the-road Mobile Guardian Transporter conceptualized and built from scratch. Data from the event will be used for qualification of the transporter and to better understand cargo response in accident scenarios for years to come.

read more ... Euro NCAP reveals its final safety ratings of 2021, covering the range from the best to the worst that the car industry has to offer across vehicle categories. Among 11 new models tested, seven achieved a top five-star rating, including the BMW iX, the Genesis' G70 and GV70, the Mercedes-EQ EQS, the Nissan Qashqai, the koda Fabia and the Volkswagen Caddy. The electric FIAT 500e and MG's Marvel R also did well and earned 4 stars each. However, the year ends on a downer as Dacia Spring and Renault s facelifted electric ZOE qualified for only one star and zero stars respectively, performing even worse than expected.

read more ... The New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP) celebrats its 10-year anniversary. ASEAN NCAP is the ninth new car assessment program in the world that performs independent assessment on the safety performance of new passenger car models released in the market. Its main objective is to promote and enhance vehicle safety standards and rating system in the ASEAN region. The safety assessment initially began with test phases in which the first phase of the assessment, comprising eight models, was funded by Global NCAP.

The European Commission published a new draft supplementing the existing (EU) 2019/2144 Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council setting out requirements concerning test procedures and technical requirements for the type-approval of motor vehicles with regard to Driver Drowsiness and Attention Warning (DDAW).

(DRI) has partnered with Westat of Rockville, MD to win the award of the NHTSA "Human factors considerations for vehicle fail-safe strategies" project, a 20-month study. Vehicle system failures could result in a significant risk for traffic safety. If a driver experiences a sudden failure while driving in traffic, there is a need for the driver to respond quickly and, depending on the circumstances and the nature of the failure, potentially get the vehicle to a safe stopping position.
