The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has proposed significant safety updates to its flagship 5-Star Safety Ratings program. These improvements are part of the Biden-Harris Administration s efforts to improve safety on our nation s roads and will help fulfill requirements included in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

NHTSA finalizes first Occupant Protection Safety Standards for Vehicles without Driving Controls

article imageThe National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a first-of-its-kind final rule to ensure safety of occupants in automated vehicles. This rule updates the occupant protection Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards to account for vehicles that do not have the traditional manual controls associated with a human driver because they are equipped with automated driving systems.

Euro NCAP Twenty-five Years on - New Polo, Taigo, Megane and NX Earn highest Accolades

article imageEuro NCAP publishes its first results of 2022 with the safety ratings of seven vehicles. The Volkswagen Polo and crossover Taigo both earn five stars. The Megane E-Tech, the first Renault model based on their new dedicated electric vehicle platform, also achieved the top safety rating, as does the new Lexus NX. The BMW 2 Series Coupé was awarded four stars.

IIHS recognizes safest 2022 Models

article imageThe Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is recognizing 65 models with the 2022 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, as improved headlight offerings boost more vehicles into the top tier. Another 36 models earn the lower-tier TOP SAFETY PICK award for a total of 101 winners overall. This time last year, there were 90 winners, including 49 earning TOP SAFETY PICK+.

Ford tests Footsteps, Bicycle Bells as Smart Driver Aler

article imageDriver alerts - in the form of visual displays and warning tones - help us to negotiate our daily drives. But what if such sounds simulated those made by potential hazards - and enabled drivers to know exactly where they were coming from? Ford is trialling smart driver alert technology that could do exactly that. Engineers are exploring a clever use of in-car audio to clearly convey the location of other road users or pedestrians. In addition, they are testing the use of intuitive sounds - such as footsteps, bicycle bells and the sound of passing cars - rather than a single tone.

NHTSA releases 2020 Traffic Crash Data

article imageThe National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released its 2020 annual traffic crash data, showing that 38,824 lives were lost in traffic crashes nationwide. That number marks the highest number of fatalities since 2007. The estimated number of police-reported crashes in 2020 decreased by 22% as compared to 2019, and the estimated number of people injured declined by 17%.
