Kistler launches THOR-5F ATD Crash Test Dummy in Cooperation with Cellbond

Kistler and Cellbond are launching the new THOR-5F ATD crash test dummy featuring a complete measuring chain. The model corresponds with the fifth percentile of the adult population - only five percent of all adults are smaller and lighter than the dummy. THOR-5F ATD consists of 250 separate components and, thanks to its adapted neck, clavicle and pelvis design, closely matches the human anatomy.

Simple Steps could reduce Motorcyclist Deaths - If only we d take them

article imageMotorcyclists are often labeled as risk-takers, so perhaps that's why our society continues to accept this loss of life. It's true that riding involves extra risk compared with driving passenger vehicles, but it's possible to reduce the risk without diminishing the joys and thrills that define motorcycling. If we're serious about reducing motorcyclist deaths, we need, at a minimum, universal helmet laws in all states, ABS on all new bikes, crash avoidance systems that detect motorcyclists, and a plan for lowering speeds of all vehicles on the road.

Yet another Study shows that Hövding provides much better Protection than traditional Helmets in Cycling Accidents

article imageA new study shows that Hövding's airbag for cyclists significantly reduces the risk of both head and neck injuries in the most common cycling accidents, compared with a traditional helmet. The researchers behind the study developed a method that uses computer models of the human body to assess injury risks in simulations of common cycling accidents. The method was then successfully used to study how Hövding's airbag for cyclists protects against head and neck injuries compared with a traditional cycle helmet.

IIHS welcomes Proposal to strengthen Set Belt Reminder Requirements

article imageA proposal by NHTSA to upgrade requirements for seat belt reminders is a welcome step forward, said David Harkey, president of IIHS. "Strong seat belt reminders are an important component of the Safe System approach to transportation, and we welcome NHTSA's proposed upgrade to the standard," Harkey said. "The small minority of drivers and passengers who fail to use this basic piece of safety equipment account for nearly half of crash fatalities, and our research has shown that if all vehicles had persistent reminders to buckle up, it would save about 1,500 lives a year."

Inventory and Assessment of commercially available Blind Spot Monitoring Systems

article imageSWOV has been commissioned by Shell Global Solutions International B.V. to perform an inventory of systems that monitor blind spots around large vehicles such as trucks and buses; so-called Blind Spot Monitoring Systems (BSMS). However it turned out to be impossible to carry out an assessment of the quality of available BSMS's based on scientifically relevant criteria; too much information about the detection performance and usability of the systems was missing due to the fact that manufacturers do not or hardly share this information (such as the number of false alarms, the share of the detection performance, missed targets). Once it was determined that a valid quality assessment using detection performance and system usability was not feasible, SWOV looked at seven 'alternative' criteria for assessing BSMS's, but only limited information was available on these.
