As highly automated and autonomous vehicles move closer to becoming an everyday reality, the demands on vehicle safety are undergoing a fundamental transformation. One critical area is passive safety, in other words, the technologies and systems designed to protect passengers during accidents. But what does the future of passive safety look like in a world where passengers might travel in new seating configurations or engage in non-driving related tasks? This is one of the key questions addressed by the EU research project AWARE2All.
Vehicle technology that can detect certain types of risky driver behavior will soon be added to the requirements for a safety award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Institute s president, David Harkey, announced September 9, 2025 during a roundtable on impaired driving organized by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).
Steering wheels for cars and commercial vehicles have long since evolved into multifunctional control units. Trends such as autonomous driving and increasing automation are placing ever higher demands on intelligent steering wheel technologies. Marquardt has therefore expanded its range of integrated, interconnected steering wheel systems. In addition to ergonomic rockers, compact switches, and smart solutions for heating and lighting, the modular product portfolio also includes a Hands-on Wheel Detection for autonomous and semi-autonomous driving functions.
Version 8.7 of the X-Crash evaluation software for passive vehicle safety offers significant new features: The software update now supports the stricter test regulations according to Euro NCAP 2026. In addition, a new interface simplifies interaction with the web-based X-Veracity evaluation center.
In the joint project "zoneZ", lighting systems specialist ZKW, the University of Applied Sciences Wiener Neustadt (FHWN) and the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) are working on the mobility of the future. The aim is to achieve greater safety for road users with fewer electronics in cars. The team of experts from the three companies is researching a new architecture for control units that requires fewer cables in the vehicle and significantly simplifies the structure of software and sensor technology.

Advanced vehicle technology is becoming increasingly common, presenting both opportunities and challenges. AAA Automotive Engineers evaluated five passenger vehicles with low-speed-capable Active Driving Assistance systems, also known as Traffic Jam Assistance, in heavy traffic. The study compared hands-on and hands-off ADA performance. Notable events occurred every 9 minutes on average. The most common events were cut ins and poor lane centering.

This spring's call for proposals to SAFER's Idea Exploration Program received an overwhelming response - with 16 applications submitted! We are now happy to announce that five promising projects have been granted funding to explore new research ideas and strengthen collaboration for safer road transport.
As part of a project commissioned by the Forschungsvereinigung Automobiltechnik e.V. (FAT), the WIVW investigated Measures for building and maintaining situational awareness in the context of automated driving . The project examined exemplary measures with regard to their effectiveness in either maintaining an appropriate level of situation awareness (especially at SAE level 2) or restoring it in good time (especially at SAE level 3).
