Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director of the Eclipse Foundation, initiated the openMobility working group. The working group had its kickoff on May 13 in Berlin-Adlershof at the SUMO User Conference 2019. In this working group, DLR will work with partners Bosch, Vector Informatik and Fraunhofer FOKUS to create a simulation platform for urban areas in a shared open source environment. The platform should be able to create tools for a detailed simulation of the movement of vehicles and persons as well as their communication systems.

The SUMO Simulation of Urban Mobility simulation software developed by the DLR Institute of Transportation Systems serves as the basis for this platform and will be further developed in the working group in close cooperation with the partners and users so that it can be used for mobility research in the future. SUMO is a simulation software that virtually simulates road traffic, incorporating traffic demand and traffic control infrastructure.
