New Seminar: Electrical and Thermal Simulations for Electric Vehicle Batteries

article imageThis new course focuses on electrical and thermal simulation models for EV batteries. The focus is on the thermal effects that can lead to battery degradation. In addition, a well-designed cooling enables fast charging. Conclusions and experiences from customer projects will be highlighted to provide participants with guidelines for optimal thermal design of battery packs.

Crash Tests and Computer Simulations of Accidents with E-Scooters

article imageMore and more people are using e-scooters. Accidents with serious injuries are also becoming more frequent. Now, Fraunhofer researchers have investigated in the "HUMAD" project a typical accident scenario experimentally and using computer simulations with human models. "Both the crash tests with the dummy and the numerical simulations with the human model both led to the same result," explains Dr. Matthias Boljen from Fraunhofer IWM. Even at an apparently low speed of only 10 km/h, an impact at a 90° angle unleashes enormous accelerations of 170 g on the human body.

AI Knows when Drivers are Getting Very Sleepy - Level 3 Automation Still Requires Alert Drivers

article imageDrowsy driving is a big problem. NHTSA estimates that in 2017, drowsy drivers in the United States caused roughly 90,000 crashes causing 50,000 injuries and 800 deaths. While manufacturers work toward autonomous vehicles, they are not ready to let a driver sit back and nap. Most vehicles won t advance beyond Level 3 autonomy for the foreseeable future, requiring the driver to remain alert and take over whenever the vehicle requests. Drowsiness will still pose a problem. Cars must determine the driver s state of awareness, and potential solutions vary.

Crashworthy and Sustainable Composite Materials will be Explored in UTMOST

article imageCircularity of materials is an important measure in our transition towards a sustainable society. For the transport system, this can mean new kinds of vehicle body structures, like material from renewable sources. In turn, this can mean new challenges in the construction so that crash safety, if an accident should occur, continues to be protective for the occupants. Simulation tools are very helpful in this development and in our associated project UTMOST (Modelling of bio-composites in occupant safety analyses), this is in the research agenda.

Virtualization in Chassis Development

article imageDue to its complexity with many variables, such as spring and steering movements, virtual chassis development requires an enormous amount of safeguarding. In view of this, the BMW Group already began years ago to successfully automate manual processes in safeguarding. A cooperation project between the BMW Group and invenio Virtual Technologies (VT) takes the process of virtual chassis design and validation to a new level.
