Life-saving Technologies: Continental develops new Functions for comprehensive Occupant Protection

article imageUnder the motto "Allround Protection", the two perspectives around the vehicle ("Pre-Crash Safety") and into the vehicle ("Occupant Safety Monitoring") will be networked more closely in the future in order to adapt the airbag deployment strategy more closely to the situation, the occupants and their position. In particular, the goal is to use signals from connected control units to implement new functions that make it possible to deploy airbags earlier and more controlled, as well as to extend their service life. Especially in the case of a side crash, every millisecond counts.

Velodyne Lidar calls for Action to improve Pedestrian Safety

article imageVelodyne Lidar, Inc. announced a white paper, written by Velodyne experts and published by SAE International, that calls for independent performance testing of driver assistance systems to be expanded to include dark, nighttime scenarios, as more than 75 percent of pedestrian fatalities occur in low-to-no light conditions. The change would address a gap in current testing protocols that primarily look at daytime conditions and largely overlook the risks to pedestrians from driver assistance systems which perform poorly in dark, nighttime conditions.

Virtual Assessment to enable safe Automated Driving

article imageTNO, Siemens DISW and Itility have started a TKI project to develop and demonstrate the use of virtual simulations for the safety assessment of Connected Automated Driving (CAD) systems. Case-by-case testing of individual functions of CAD systems is no longer sufficient to ensure operational safety on the road. This project enables Virtual Assessment of CAD systems using simulations of a large variety of tests based on TNO's StreetWise technology.

Insurance Data show bigger Benefits for Young Drivers from Crash Avoidance Tech

article imageCrash avoidance features seem to benefit young drivers more than others, recent studies by the Highway Loss Data Institute show. Crash avoidance systems are associated with larger reductions in the frequency of collision and property damage liability (PDL) claims for drivers under 25 years old than those ages 25 and older, HLDI found in separate studies of Honda, Kia and Subaru vehicles.
