 | More and more people are using e-scooters. Accidents with serious injuries are also becoming more frequent. Now, Fraunhofer researchers in the "HUMAD" project have investigated a typical accident scenario experimentally and using computer simulations with human models. "Both the crash tests with the dummy and the numerical simulations with the human model both led to the same result," explains Dr. Matthias Boljen from Fraunhofer IWM. Even at an apparently low speed of only 10 km/h, an impact at a 90° angle unleashes enormous accelerations of 170 g on the human body.

Over the years, AEB has successfully stemmed rear-end crashes, which often result in injuries, property damage, and even fatalities. But AAA wanted to know if the latest generation of AEB can handle higher speeds and detect moving vehicles in its path at intersections. It struggled with the former and failed with the latter.

For the transport system, this can mean new kinds of vehicle body structures, like material from renewable sources. In turn, this can mean new challenges in the construction so that crash safety, if an accident should occur, continues to be protective for the occupants. Simulation tools are very helpful in this development and in our associated project UTMOST (Modelling of bio-composites in occupant safety analyses), this is in the research agenda.
