 Calspan secures Pedestrian Protection Testing ContractThe USDOT National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently awarded Calspan a contract to perform pedestrian protection testing. Pedestrian protection systems are vehicle safety systems designed to mitigate injury during a pedestrian s impact with a car. The sensors in front of the car react when the vehicle collides with a pedestrian, activating the safety system.

Euro NCAP's releases the results for its largest group of cars this year and all, but one of the sixteen cars tested achieved Euro NCAP s maximum five-star rating. Testing a wide range of vehicles in a wide range of classes, the results show the determination of manufacturers to do well in Euro NCAP s protocols for this year. In 2023, the protocols take a turn for the tougher encouraging manufacturers to consider other road users in line with Euro NCAP's Vision 2030.
HORIBA MIRA's leading connected and automated vehicle test ecosystem ASSURED CAV has won the "Test Facility of the Year" award at the Vehicle Dynamics International Awards 2022. Readers of Vehicle Dynamics International were invited to nominate the products, teams and technologies from the past 12 months that they consider to be the most innovative, those shortlisted were put forward for evaluation by the publication s jury of industry experts.
It began with a meeting in a hotel room. On November 5th, 1947, six AAA board members and staff huddled at Washington D.C.'s famed Mayflower Hotel to forge something new. One of AAA's primary missions since its founding in 1902 was keeping roadways safe. The organization launched one of its first traffic safety initiatives in 1922 with the school safety patrol program. That prompted other safety-related programs, including a landmark effort to reverse the soaring pedestrian fatality rate during the 1930s. But there was a sense that more needed to be done.
Automatic emergency braking (AEB) reduces rear-end crash rates for pickups dramatically, a new study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety shows. But despite the heightened danger they pose to other road users, pickups are less likely to be equipped with the crash avoidance feature than cars or SUVs.
A high-performance and reliable radar module is the key to an improved automated driving assistance system and autonomous driving in the future. New features, such as advanced emergency braking systems (AEBs) that react to crossing motorcyclists, will demand higher performance and increased modules per car. Key drivers for this growth are NCAP programs and legislation.
Five out of six small pickups tested earn good or acceptable ratings in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's updated side crash test. The Chevrolet Colorado crew cab, GMC Canyon crew cab and Honda Ridgeline crew cab earn good ratings, while the Nissan Frontier crew cab and Ford Ranger crew cab are rated acceptable. The Toyota Tacoma crew cab is rated marginal.
Allegro MicroSystems, Inc. announced the A31316 3D Hall-effect position sensor, the latest addition to the company's 3DMAG line of 3D sensors. Offered in an industry-smallest 4 × 4 mm body PCB-less package, this new sensor is ideal for automotive safety and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) applications that require high levels of flexibility and reliable performance in harsh conditions such as powertrain and chassis applications, as well as industrial applications that require linear or rotary sensing.
TNO announced a strategic collaboration with Torc Robotics, an independent subsidiary of Daimler Truck. They are working together to substantiate the safety of self-driving trucks using scenario-based safety validation. TNO's StreetWise, a safety validation methodology based on a real-world scenario database, provides a large collection of "driving events". The methodology is designed to test and validate autonomous driving systems performance according to the latest safety requirements.
Transurban surveyed 5,000 Australian and North American drivers to understand their driving behaviours that impact road safety. What Trransurban found shows more education is needed on all four driving behaviours Transurban explored. Transurban also found that drivers don't always realise they re getting safety wrong.
