Autonomous Driving: New Algorithm distributes Risk fairly

Researchers at the Technical University of Munich have developed autonomous driving software which distributes risk on the street in a fair manner. The algorithm contained in the software is considered to be the first to incorporate the 20 ethics recommendations of the EU Commission expert group, thus making significantly more differentiated decisions than previous algorithms. Operation of automated vehicles is to be made significantly safer by assessing the varying degrees of risk to pedestrians and motorists. The code is available to the general public as Open Source software.

Crashing Cars for Science & Safety

article imageDeveloping realistic crash scenarios and simulations of future traffic situations involving many autonomous vehicles is at the heart of a recently established project at IMC Krems - University of Applied Sciences (Austria). In the first step of the project, driving scenarios extracted from publicly available databases will be fed into specialized driving simulations. Following this, an optimization process based on state-of-the-art search algorithms will create novel driving scenarios with increased criticality and severity.

Mandatory Distraction Warning Systems won't detect most important Types of Distraction

article imageETSC has written to the European Commission to warn that draft specifications for mandatory distraction warning systems, required on new types of vehicles from 2024, won't detect distraction from infotainment systems or mobile phones mounted on the dashboard. Distraction warning systems are a requirement of the EU's vehicle safety technology package agreed in 2019. But detailed technical specifications are in the process of being agreed in technical working groups.
