The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) announced a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) that would require heavy vehicles to have automatic emergency braking (AEB) systems that will mitigate the frequency and severity of rear-end crashes.

By adding ChatGPT, voice control via the MBUX Voice Assistant's Hey Mercedes will become even more intuitive. An optional beta programme will start June 16, 2023 in the U.S. for over 900.000 vehicles equipped with the MBUX infotainment system.

read more ... There were 20,678 deaths on EU roads in 2022, a collective increase of 4 % compared to 2021. Out of the 32 countries monitored by the PIN programme, only 13 registered a decrease in road deaths in 2022, compared to 2021. Slovenia was ranked first with a 25 % reduction, followed by Latvia with 23 % and Lithuania and Cyprus with 18 %. Poland is the winner of the 2023 ETSC PIN Award, having cut road deaths by 47 % over the period 2012-2022.

In connection to the global ministerial conference on road safety in 2020, when traffic safety footprint was first introduced as a concept with great potential for improving global road safety, SAFER has worked committed to build and spread knowledge about this new way of approaching safety in traffic. A Think Tank for traffic safety footprint, funded by SAFER with partners from Autoliv, VTI, Volvo Group, the Swedish Transport Administration and Folksam has made great progress in mapping suitable activities and research questions that could be addressed to accelerate implementation. SAFER's board is now investing in prolonging the Think Tank, which is now entering its second phase.

Drivers struck and killed at least 7,508 people walking in the United States in 2022 - the most pedestrian deaths since 1981 - according to a new report released by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA). The report also includes an analysis of 2021 data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that reveals a troubling safety disparity for people on foot: Pedestrian fatalities have skyrocketed 77 % since 2010, compared to 25 % for all other traffic-related deaths.

read more ... In June 2023 the female crash test dummy SET 50F, and her male counterpart SET 50M, were presented to Swedish journalists for the first time. The dummies were previously presented at an international road safety conference and attracted a great deal of interest and attention. SET stands for Seat Evaluation Tool, and 50 is the median value for the height and weight of real men and women.

In March 2022, UNECE's World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP.29) adopted a UN Global Technical Regulation No. 22 providing minimum performance requirements for the battery durability of electrified light-duty vehicles. The European Union and the United States have already made legislative proposals to transpose this regulation into their legislations. The World Forum has now decided to develop similar provisions for heavy-duty vehicles under a new UN Global Technical Regulation.
