NHTSA proposes Seat Belt Warning System Expansion to encourage Drivers and Passengers to Buckle UpThe U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a proposed rule which requires automobile manufacturers to equip vehicles with seat belt use warning systems for the right front passenger and rear seats to increase seat belt use. The new requirements would apply to passenger cars, trucks, most buses, and multipurpose passenger vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less.

Honda Accord shines while other Midsize Cars struggle in Rear-seat Safety TestThe Honda Accord outperformed other midsize cars in the updated moderate overlap front crash test, earning a rare good rating in the new, challenging evaluation focused on rear-seat protection. Among the other six midsize cars tested, the Subaru Outback earns an acceptable rating. The Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry are rated marginal. The Hyundai Sonata, Kia K5 and Volkswagen Jetta are rated poor.

Based on a dataset for a previous study of fatally injured bicyclists in Sweden, the two most common crash sccenarios were selected.

New European Legislation to improve Truck Safety following Advocacy funded by FIA FoundationThe European Union has implemented a new law to improve visibility for truck drivers, a measure advocated for by Transport and Environment, supported by the FIA Foundation. The legislation addresses safety blind spots, which are areas around and in front of the truck cab that drivers cannot directly see, a significant step toward enhancing road safety for cyclists and pedestrians.

The new concept for software-update approval via the mobile network, Digital Loop, will be showcased for the first time at IAA Mobility in Munich from September 4 to 8.

While driving, airbags are normally hidden behind a high-grade plastic panel called a slush skin that envelops large parts of the vehicle's interior. For the skin to tear open along the right lines, it is perforated meticulously after manufacture. However, for the airbag to fully deploy in an emergency, the material and the intended tear lines must be matched as closely as possible. To make sure this is the case, user-friendly, cutting-edge technology is now used to inspect the slush skins: The Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM in Kaiserslautern has developed a hand-held terahertz measurement system for individual, non-destructive quality control of slush skins.
