 ZF unveils Smart Seat Belt TechnologyWith its new seat belt system, ZF Passive Safety Systems will enable significantly improved adaptation of the belt force limitation to the size and body weight of the vehicle occupants in the future. The Multi-Stage Load Limiter (MSLL) is primarily responsible for the individual system adjustment. It helps to further reduce the consequences of accidents for all occupants and enables car manufacturers to meet the increased requirements of the NCAP Roadmap 2030.

UNECE's Working Party on Automated/Autonomous and Connected Vehicles decided to include motorcycles, scooters and electric bicycles with speed exceeding 25 km/h in the scope of the UN Regulation No. 155 on cyber security and cyber security management. In force since January 2021, UN Regulation 155 is applied in various regions of the world and covers passenger cars, trucks, and buses.
Infineon and Aurora Labs have used CES 2024 to unveil a new set of AI-based solutions to improve the long-term reliability and safety of critical automotive components, including steering, braking and airbags. The companies are offering solutions that implement Aurora Labs' Line-of-Code Intelligence (LOCI) AI technology on Infineon's 32-bit TriCore AURIX TC4x family of microcontrollers (MCUs).
Integrating tyre intelligence powered by Goodyear SightLine into advanced anti-lock brake systems has the potential to reduce stopping distance by nearly six feet. The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and TNO have showcased new possibilities for enhancing vehicle safety by integrating tire intelligence technology into the anti-lock brake system controller of a test vehicle.
As part of the National Roadway Safety Strategy, NHTSA recently awarded the University of Virginia's Center for Applied Biomechanics eight competitive research contracts totaling $4.1 million, with optional follow-on tasks bringing the total to more than $11 million. The contracts will further the center's already impressive research in various areas crucial to automotive safety.
HELLA and TÜV Rheinland have agreed to cooperate in the field of autonomous driving. The aim of the collaboration is the market-compliant development of a new "Traffic Rule Engine": this new software module knows the applicable local traffic regulations and thus enables autonomous vehicles to behave in accordance with the rules.
NXP announced an extension of its automotive radar one-chip family. The new SAF86xx monolithically integrates a high-performance radar transceiver, a multi-core radar processor and a MACsec hardware engine for state-of-the-art secure data communication over Automotive Ethernet. Combined with NXP's S32 high-performance processors, vehicle network connectivity and power management, the full system solution paves the way for advanced, software-defined radar.
Continental's Radar Vision Parking was named as a CES2024 Innovation Award Honoree under the product category Vehicle Tech & Advanced Mobility. By combining high-resolution surround radars with high-resolution cameras, Continental enables parking use cases that require very precise and close-range measurement around the vehicle. Early parking slot detection, for example, lets users park in a single stroke without driving past the spot.
Valeo Smart Safety 360 (VSS 360), is a new turnkey driver assistance system (ADAS) that enables OEMs to offer safety and park assist functions from entry-level models. Drawing on Valeo's hardware and software expertise, Valeo's Smart Safety 360 system is an efficient way to provide a range of safety and parking assistance functions with limited impact on the architecture, and therefore on the cost, of the vehicle.
Batteries fitted to electric vans will be required to be of high quality and durable over the years thanks to a proposal agreed by UNECE's Working Party on Pollution and Energy (GRPE). The proposal will now be submitted to the UNECE-hosted World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP.29) for adoption in June 2024.
Getting autonomous vehicles to work properly in sunny and dry weather is difficult enough. Add heavy rain, high winds and dense fog and the task becomes even more difficult. The ROADVIEW project is about just that autonomous vehicles in extreme weather.
The board of directors of the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Walter Eichendorf as President from 1 January 2024. Professor Herman De Croo, the founding president of ETSC since 1993, step down at the end of December after serving as board president for 30 years.
