The growth of automatic emergency braking systems undercuts a common gripe about red light safety cameras by preventing rear-end crashes that can occur when drivers stop short, a new study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety shows. Red light safety cameras reduce the dangerous right-angle crashes that often cause injuries or fatalities when drivers run red lights.
AB Dynamics presents ClearTrack, an update to the automotive industry's first fully integrated object detection system for driverless robot-controlled vehicle testing. ClearTrack enables automotive manufacturers to scale-up their driverless durability, misuse, and mileage accumulation testing operations by automating obstacle detection and avoidance, maximising uptime, and optimising test schedules.
Toyota Motor North America announced that it has allocated and broken ground on more than $50 million in construction of new amenities for vehicle and automotive technology testing and development, affirming commitment to the Arizona Proving Grounds. The new construction includes a 5.5-mile oval track, an off-road park, and new ride and handling surfaces, among many other improvements.
The Maruti Suzuki Victoris has scored a five star result for both adult and child occupant protection, the second new model from Maruti to attain five star Global NCAP status after the Dzire was launched at the end of last year. The Victoris has been voluntarily tested according to the requirements of Global NCAP's new protocols.
Pedestrian fatalities remain a sobering global reality. The World Health Organization reports that road traffic accidents claim approximately 1.19 million lives every year, and more than half of these deaths involve vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists (Road Traffic Injuries, 2023, WHO). As urban populations grow, mobility patterns change, and quieter electric vehicles become more common, the risks to pedestrians are increasing.
The global number of motorcycles and mopeds has nearly tripled over the past decade - while fatalities have increased by 30 %. Studies also show that female riders and riders with higher BMI face a higher risk of severe injuries in crashes. The new partner project Equal Safety for the Whole Population of Powered Two-Wheeler Riders, funded by VINNOVA, will develop new methods and tools to better understand injury risks and create effective protection systems for powered two- and three-wheeler riders. The focus is on variations in rider size, sex, posture, and vehicle types.
Kajima Corporation and Subaru Corporation have launched real-world demonstration tests of cooperative vehicle-infrastructure autonomous driving using optical fiber sensor technology, installing optical fiber sensor cables inside the asphalt pavement of an expressway serving as an access route to the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan site.
