Laser Attack blinds Autonomous Vehicles, deleting Pedestrians and confusing Cars

article imageNew research reveals that expertly timed lasers shined at an approaching lidar system can create a blind spot in front of the vehicle large enough to completely hide moving pedestrians and other obstacles. The deleted data causes the cars to think the road is safe to continue moving along, endangering whatever may be in the attack's blind spot.

How Simulation drives the top Automotive Trends: Autonomous Vehicles

article imageWe are still many years away from ordering up an autonomous vehicle to drive us around town - and most of us aren t in a hurry to relinquish the steering wheel. In a recent survey conducted by the American Automobile Association, a majority of drivers favored improvements to driver assist systems already in place over the development of fully autonomous experiences. In fact, when asked, 85% said they were fearful or unsure of self-driving technology.

Rectangular 4:3 Field of Illumination of new ams OSRAM IR LEDs cuts Cost and raises Performance of Cabin Monitoring Systems

article imageams OSRAM introduced the first members of the OSLON® Black family of infrared (IR) LEDs with a rectangular beam that matches the 4:3 aspect ratio of the wide-angle cameras in cabin monitoring systems. The new SFH47278AS A01 produces a 155° x 130° field of illumination (FoI), and the SFH47267AS A01's FoI is 135° x 110°. Automotive manufacturers which use the SFH47278AS A01 or SFH47267AS A01 emitters can reduce the complexity and cost of the optical stack in cabin monitoring systems while improving the quality and reliability of the IR images which they capture.
