The China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC) with the support of Humanetics has established exploratory research to better understand occupant behavior under Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) conditions. The study investigates the applicability of the BioRID dummy, widely recognized for rear-impact (whiplash) testing, in evaluating occupant kinematics during pre-crash braking events.
How can vehicles better protect occupants in the future? The research project "AI-SAFe - Adaptive Occupant Safety for Automated Driving", which started at THI at the beginning of 2026, is dedicated to this question. The aim of the project, which will run until the end of 2028, is to further develop restraint systems such as airbags and seatbelts so that they adapt to the accident situation and occupants in real time, thereby effectively reducing injuries.
Mercedes-Benz is marking 140 years of automotive innovation with a new S-Class built for the AI era, bringing together automotive safety and NVIDIA's advanced autonomous driving platform to enable a level 4-ready architecture designed for trust. A new EU proposal to freeze safety requirements for small electric cars for up to ten years could put lives at risk and create a two-tier vehicle safety system, ETSC said in a briefing published in March 2026. The European Commission's Automotive Omnibus package includes plans to create a new vehicle sub-category for small electric cars (M1E).
Michael Graham, the 45th member of the National Transportation Safety Board, was designated by U.S. President Donald J. Trump to serve as NTSB vice chairman for a three-year term. INSIGHT is a new partner research project aiming to make our roads safer by detecting when a driver is impaired or has reduced driving ability, while the driving is happening. The project uses real-world driving data and looks closely at glance/gaze behaviour to understand what "normal driving" looks like and when something starts to deviate.
